Boats of Many Colors

As I was creating the Truth Continuum, I started using the boat form to symbolize the journey all of us take in our lives; especially people affected by changes in immigration, the environment religious and sexual preferences. This work is the Earth seen from the  K-12 location in outer space. There are 18 boats symbolizing the written record of the most important journeys in our cultural lives: the World’s religious documents - Book of Documents, the Triptaka, the Vedas, the Bible, the Quran and the Hieroglyphs; the Magna Carta; the Declaration of Independence; the Constitution, the 13th Amendment-to end slavery; the 14th Amendment- rights of citizenship; the 19th Amendment;-giving women the right to vote; the 23rd Amendment- DC Statehood, the Civil Rights Act; the Endangered Species Act; the Voters’ Rights Act of 1964; the Real of the Muslim Ban; Biden’s Executive orders of 2021.

The earth, clouds, waves and boats are made from natural fibers (cotton, abaca, lilies, iris, grass, flax, banana, bamboo, palm, hemp, calla, grapevine, kozo, mitsumata, papyras, sisal, cattail, thistle, sunflower and okra) and natural dyes.
